UPDATE: Overnight blaze causes smoke, fire and water damage to a commercial business in Garrison
UPDATE 11:40 A.M. TUESDAY: Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar says a blaze at a commercial unit in Garrison early Tuesday caused smoke, water and fire damage to a Garrison business.
On arrival, firefighters learned that residents had evacuated the upper floors amid ringing fire alarms being activated. As firefighters assessed the scene, crews determined a fire had occurred in the kitchen of one of the commercial units on the ground floor. Minar says the unit was unoccupied at the time and the building’s suppression system activated, thereby successfully containing the fire. Fire crews from Halls 1 and 4 worked to quickly extinguish the fire.
Minar says the fire resulted in fire, smoke and water damage to the commercial unit, but no residents have been displaced by the blaze.
“We are pleased with the timely evacuation of the building’s residents, which highlights the importance of having a fire escape plan,” Minar said. “We encourage all residents, whether in single-family homes or multi-unit dwellings, to have a practiced plan in place.”
