Train derails in Abbotsford near Canada-U.S. border

UPDATE 8:15 A.M. FRIDAY (July 18): Abbotsford police say there are no injuries after the derailment late Thursday night, but road closures are expected to remain through most of the day until heavy equipment can deal with the train cars.

The road on 4th Ave remains closed this morning from West Railway to the commercial vehicle entrance for the Sumas border crossing.

ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford are advising the public about a train derailment that happened late Thursday night in Abbotsford near the Canada-U.S. border.

According to a social media post, the train derailment happened on 4th Avenue near Riverside Road, causing a significant roadblock in both westbound and eastbound directions on 4th Avenue.

Police say the Sumas border is not impacted, however drivers should avoid Riverside Road and seek an alternate route.

Police say there is no estimated time when this might clear.
