Abbotsford area inmate sent to hospital following prison assault

ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford Police and Corrections Canada are investigating an incident that sent one inmate to hospital from the Pacific Institution / Regional Treatment Centre.

According to a Corrections Canada news release, an inmate assaulted another inmate on Wednesday, July 9. The victim was taken to a hospital in the area to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the assault. The victim has since returned to jail.

Corrections Canada says the assailant was identified and appropriate actions were taken. However, the news release doesn’t provide any specific penalties.

No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident.

Corrections Canada states that the assault will be the subject of a review, and if necessary, it promises to take action to improve its practices.
