CHILLIWACK — Confirming what an online social media post alluded to over the weekend, a spokesperson for the City of Chilliwack says a minor failure occurred at a Chilliwack road paving project Friday.

On Friday evening, a Facebook user named Lacy Mae posted in Chilliwack Beware Crime and Safety that the three-way stop at Chilliwack River Road, Prairie Central Road and Young Road was closed. Mae said a flagger told the people she was with that the road collapsed.

A spokesperson for the City of Chilliwack has now confirmed that a “small depression” was observed during paving at the intersection.

“Thank you for your email. During the repaving works at Young Road, Chilliwack River Road and Prairie Central Road, a small depression in the road was observed, representing a minor failure below the road surface,” said Jaimie Tocher, communications assistant for the city, in an email to Fraser Valley Today.

Tocher says the road has been repaired and is open to traffic.

The cause of the depression is being investigated by staff in engineering and operations.

A Fraser Valley Today reporter attended the scene Friday night and saw that traffic turning east from Luckakuck Way onto Chilliwack River Road was blocked. Flaggers were present to direct traffic away from the paving project and the location where the minor depression occurred.
