Fire west of the river Lytton doubles in size: BCWS

UPDATE 9:45 A.M. TUESDAY (CANADA DAY): The fire west of the Fraser River, and west of Lytton altogether, has now grown to 5.73 hectares, according to the latest information on the B.C. Wildfire Service website. It was 2.1 hectares as of late Monday night. There are currently 12 firefighters and one Response Officer responding to this wildfire. BCWS’ website was last updated at 6:57 a.m. this morning on Canada Day.

UPDATE 11:15 P.M.: MONDAY: Lytton First Nation says it is urging residents and visitors within Papyum 27, Papyum 27A, Lytton 27B and Nohomeen 23 to be prepared to evacuate if ordered to do so by emergency officials.

According to a Facebook post from Lytton FN, the evacuation alert covers Papyum 27, Papyum 27A, Lytton 27B and Nohomeen 23. The evacuation alert was made official at 10:05 p.m. on June 30.

Lytton FN urges people to locate all family members or coworkers and designate safe meeting place in the event that an evacuation order is called; gather essential items like medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers, aand immediate care needs for dependents and keepsakes; consider moving any disabled persons and/or children to a safe area; move pets and livestock to a safe area; arrange transport for household members or coworkers in the event of an evacuation order; arrange accommodation for your family members if possible; and monitor news outlets for information on the location of reception centres and the status of evacuation orders.

ORIGINAL STORY, 10:05 P.M. MONDAY: 

LYTTON — A wildfire has broken out west of Lytton Monday night.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) dashboard, the fire is 2.1 hectares in size.

It is considered out of control as of Monday night, defined as a wildfire that is spreading or is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter or control line.

The suspect cause is human-related, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

The location description is Nikaia Creek.

There are currently 12 firefighters and one Response Officer responding to this wildfire.

People in a Lytton-area Facebook group reported that the fire had already been reported to BCWS as of 8:47 p.m.

The west flank of the fire was burning in grassy fuel types which have mostly burnt out. Crews are focusing along the north flank of the fire, establishing hose lay and using direct attack methods on the fire’s edge.

Structure protection assessments are being conducted.

Lytton First Nation is supporting crews with a water tender for water delivery to the fire. They also have a crew conducting proactive fuel mitigation work on properties in the vicinity of the fire.

On June 30, 2021, just one day after Lytton hit a Canadian temperature record of 49.6 C, a wildfire swept through the village and ravaged the small community, killing two people and levelling almost the entire community. The town and its residents have been determined to see the village rebuild.
