Hot weather is arriving in the Fraser Valley, just in time for Canada Day

CHILLIWACK — With temperatures climbing across the Fraser Valley, Fraser Health is reminding residents to stay cool and look out for those at higher risk of heat-related illness.

Environment Canada is forecasting daytime highs in the upper 20s through Canada Day, with humidex values potentially reaching into the 30s. Overnight lows are expected to remain in the mid-teens, offering limited relief from the daytime heat.

Fraser Health says these conditions—especially this early in the summer—can lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The health authority is urging people to check in regularly with those who are most vulnerable, including seniors, individuals who live alone, and people with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory issues.

It says early signs of heat-related illness can be subtle. Checking in on at-risk individuals can help prevent serious situations.

Fraser Health is also promoting sun safety and asking people to limit their exposure during peak heat hours. Residents are encouraged to wear light, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats when outdoors, and to stay in shaded or air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.

Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher should be applied regularly when outdoors.

The reminder comes as thousands prepare to celebrate Canada Day outdoors. Fraser Health says a few precautions can help ensure a safe and healthy holiday for everyone.
