CHILLIWACK — As the school bells ring for the last time this school year, Chilliwack RCMP are urging residents to look out for young pedestrians and cyclists while they head outdoors for the summer.

“Our students have learned how to stay safe as pedestrians and cyclists. Now it’s up to all of us to help them put those lessons into practice,” said Cpl. Cynthia Kershaw, School Liaison Officer with Chilliwack RCMP. “Drivers need to slow down, stay focused, and watch for kids who may be excited and less aware of their surroundings.”

Motorists can expect to see more kids out in neighbourhoods, parks and local streets. Mounties have issued the following safety tips for anyone sharing the road during the sunny season:

  • Drivers must be alert for children, who can jump out without warning.
  • Cyclists must get at least one metre of space for passing.
  • Cyclists must also ride on the right side of the road, in the same direction as traffic.
  • Pedestrians must look both ways and cross at marked crosswalks and intersections.
  • Pedestrians must also put away their phones and remove their earbuds when crossing the street.
