CHILLIWACK — Tydel Foods, a Chilliwack meat shop known for its low prices and generosity, is looking to add some cozy changes to its seniors program– with some help from the community.

The Community Angels Food and Housing Support Society is building a new Seniors’ Room for older adults to meet and socialize over complimentary coffee, tea, and toast.

“So many of our beautiful seniors are coming in crying, lonely, and deeply hurting, and we want to give them a special space to feel seen, heard, and valued,” wrote owner Brigida Crosbie in a social media post Thursday (Jun. 26). “A place where they can play a game of crib, sip a warm drink, do a puzzle, or just sit in peace surrounded by kindness.”

Chilliwack-based interior designer Maria Killam has taken on the task of designing the room. Residents are invited to donate anywhere from games to food items, including:

  • 100- to 500-piece puzzles
  • Puzzle books, e.g. crosswords, word searches, Sudoku
  • Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate Keurig pods
  • Juice boxes, cookies, and fruit cups with peaches, pears, or mandarin oranges
  • Two newer laptops to help seniors fill out housing forms or connect with loved ones

Items can be dropped off at Tydel Foods, located at 45766 Patten Ave, or you can message the store on Facebook for more information. Cash donations can also be made at donations@communityangels.ca.

The Community Angels program provides fresh fruit and vegetables at no cost to low-income seniors every month. Tydel Foods has applied to become a registered charity and is expected to receive its charity number by November 27.
