ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford police have now arrested a suspect in relation to the overnight stabbing on Tuesday night (Jun. 24).

On June 24 at 6:14 p.m., the Abbotsford Police Department responded to an incident in the 32700 block of South Fraser Way and found a 20-year-old with non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed by an unknown man.

“This is a very serious crime that not only impacted the victim, but the community at large,” said Sergeant Derek Baker with AbbyPD’s Major Crime Unit. “Our Major Crime detectives worked diligently to identify, locate, and apprehend this repeat violent offender. We have recommended that Mr. Matthews be held in custody.”

Yesterday, June 26, 46-year-old Robert Matthews was arrested and faces charges for aggravated assault and failing to comply with a probation order. He is known to law enforcement as a repeat offender with an extensive criminal record.

“This senseless act of violence is both shocking and deeply troubling—it has no place in our community. We must not allow such incidents to become normalized on our streets. Ensuring public safety remains the top priority for the Abbotsford Police Department. I am proud of the work of our team who worked hard to identify the accused and bring these charges forward,” said Chief Constable Colin Watson.

Police thank the community for their continued support throughout the investigation.
