Special weather statement issued for possible snow on Coquihalla overnight

HOPE — Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt on Friday (Jun. 20).

It may be the first day of summer, but an upper disturbance travelling over southern B.C. is bringing widespread showers and possibly – wet snow – over the highway summits.

Snow levels may temporarily lower to 1200-1600 metres as the weather system moves up and down through the region. Snowfall accumulations will highly depend on elevation.

Drivers are asked to expect snowfall with a trace of up to 4 cm over high elevation passes from tonight to Saturday afternoon (Jun. 21).

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions,” wrote the weather agency. “Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”

The weather statement also applies to the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna, and parts of Highway 3 in Allison Pass and from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

You can find road conditions on DriveBC’s website.
