AGASSIZ — B.C.’s police watchdog is now investigating an incident in Agassiz that left one person injured and airlifted to hospital Thursday night (Jun. 19).

At about 7:43 p.m., Agassiz RCMP responded to a call about a person damaging a home on Highway 9 between McDonald Road and Bristol Drive.

Officers arrived to find the affected person and a woman with a handgun, who reportedly pointed the gun at police before going into the home.

The woman allegedly pointed the gun again and shot outside. Officers returned fire, which hit her, and then went back inside the home.

Members of the Integrated Emergency Response Team arrived to arrest the woman, and BCEHS took her in for assessment and treatment. One ambulance with primary care paramedics, one ambulance with advanced care paramedics and an air ambulance with critical care paramedics responded to the scene.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported to hospital via air ambulance in serious condition,” said Paramedic Public Information Officer Brian Twaites.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is now investigating to see if the injury meets the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act, as well as any connection between the serious harm and police actions.

Any witnesses that have not already provided a statement or who have video footage of the incident are asked to contact the IIO toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or through the contact form on the IIO website.

Police will not be releasing any more information at this time.
