Chilliwack-area First Nation to hold ratification vote

CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack-area First Nation will hold a ratification vote on a ballot measure that the band says could unlock the full economic potential of its sovereign commercial and industrial lands.

According to a social media post from the band, the ballot measure aims to extend lease terms from 15 years to 99 years.

The band suggests the proposed change will make long-term leases more attractive to investors, businesses and developers; improve financing options since banks and investors often require longer lease terms for major projects; reduce administrative pressure by avoiding frequent community votes for leases over 15 years; enhance negotiation powers by procuring better partnerships with businesses and developers; and support future flexibility, whether it’s for the Cheam Travel Centre or other developments.

According to the social media post, the band contends longer leases provide more options for building meaningful and revenue-generating opportunities, saying the process is about securing long-term economic benefits while maintaining Cheam’s authority over how the land is used.
