CHILLIWACK — A much-loved clothing and gift shop in the heart of the city is soon closing its doors after 20 years in business.

The Button Box owner Jeanie Blecker looked back at the shop’s journey in a social media post Thursday night (Jun. 13), including her personal health challenges and the loss of her husband to cancer less than a year ago.

“It has been an incredible journey as we navigated through the many ups and downs of owning a small retail store,” wrote Blecker. “[W]ith that in mind, it is time for me to focus on a future that involves less stress and work load so I can spend more quality time with the ones I love.”

Blecker began with a small antique shop from her home studio in 2005. Now, with over 4,800 followers on Facebook and a whopping 14,000 on Instagram, she has left a legacy worth being proud of.

“Retirement sounds really good at this point in my life.”

In 2021, The Button Box gained wider attention when Blecker and Lolly’s Fashion Lounge owner Lois Chadburn helped a visitor get ready for a wedding after having to evacuate her hotel– one of many wholesome stories out of the not-so-little shop on Mill Street.

“The many friendships we have built are a testament to our amazing community who support small businesses,” she said. “[I] want to thank the nicest women who I have had the pleasure of working with. You made coming to work so much easier, a bit crazier, but definitely more fun and I couldn’t have done so without your help.”

The boutique is holding a final sale from now until the shop closes at an unspecified later date, but it may not be the end yet. Blecker added that there is an opportunity for another creative to carry on The Button Box’s brand, and serious inquirers can reach out at info@thebuttonbox.ca or call 604-795-2492.
