Mission RCMP seeks DoorDash driver riding in car during vehicle theft

MISSION — Police are hoping to speak with a DoorDash driver who was possibly taken for a ride in his own car while it was being stolen.

Just before 7:30 p.m. on May 30, Mission RCMP went to assist a road crew near Stave Lake Street and Dewdney Trunk Road after a man allegedly tried to steal a flagging truck from them. The suspect tried to run off after getting into the truck, but police found and arrested him shortly afterwards.

Witnesses reported that he arrived in a grey sedan with a passenger– who claimed it was actually his car. The passenger left the scene before police could talk to him. RCMP later received a different report from another witness who saw the theft of a grey sedan from a DoorDash driver.

“That person reported that the delivery driver got into the passenger seat of the vehicle while it was being taken,” wrote the RCMP. “The investigation into confirming whether these two events are linked, is ongoing.”

There are no reported injuries to the driver or anyone at the construction site, but police have yet to find the delivery driver.

Mission resident Jesse Lee Grabinsky was charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle and released by the court with various conditions. He was arrested again on June 7 in relation to another vehicle theft in which a grey Nissan Rogue was stolen from Oak Lane near 1st Avenue and Welton Street and recovered in an alley between 4th and 5th Avenue.

The 41-year-old has been charged with further offences and remains in jail awaiting a bail hearing.

Anyone with information on the May 30 incident (file #25-6223) or the June 7 theft (file #25-6612) can call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161.
