SQUAMISH — Mounties in Squamish are investigating the cause of the massive Dryden Creek Area fire that grew from five hectares to 54 hectares.

On Monday, June 9, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Squamish RCMP and Squamish Fire Rescue were first notified of smoke on the hillside at the end of Tantalus Road. Due to dry conditions, police say the fire spread rapidly and continues to burn.

Squamish RCMP say they are working closely with BC Wildfire Service and Squamish Fire Rescue.

According to a statement from B.C. RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Vanessa Munn, the fire is believed to have first ignited around 4 p.m. on a bike trail at the end of Tantalus Road. Based on preliminary information, investigators suspect the fire was human-caused, however, the exact source and circumstances remain under investigation, Sgt. Munn said.

“We believe there were individuals on the trail around the time the fire started who may have information,” said S/Sgt. Gareth Bradley, Squamish RCMP. “We encourage anyone who was out walking or hiking in the area to contact police, even if you think what you saw isn’t important. Sometimes the smallest detail can make a big difference.”

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have information related to the fire to contact Squamish RCMP at 604- 892-6100.

As of Wednesday night, the fire is now 54 hectares and is still designated as out of control by B.C. Wildfire Service.
