FVRD battles mosquito season with annual control program

FRASER VALLEY — The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is zapping away at mosquito season this summer with the launch of its annual floodwater control program.

Technicians with Morrow BioScience Ltd. will be working near river edges in bright vests to monitor levels and mosquito larvae from flood and seepage waters. If necessary, they also have the authority to locally reduce the number of larvae before they become adult mosquitoes.

“Even though the mosquito forecast for the year is expected to be below average due to relatively low snow accumulation, an uptick in mosquito abundance is still anticipated for June and July as river levels rise and mosquito larvae begin to hatch,” wrote the FVRD in a news release.

“Local increases in mosquito abundance may be particularly noted if there is heavy rainfall or if residents are near rivers or wetted areas where larvae emerge.”
