Health authorities issue safety reminder as temperatures heat up in Fraser Valley

CHILLIWACK — Fraser Health has now released a public service announcement after Environment Canada issued special weather statements for several parts of Southern B.C., including the Fraser Valley.

From Saturday (Jun. 6) to early next week, the region is set to experience its first stretch of summer temperatures in an early-season heat event. Daytime highs are expected to range from the high 20s to low 30s, with overnight lows staying within the teens.

“Early season heat can be significant due to the lack of acclimatization to elevated temperatures,” wrote Environment Canada. “[I]f you or someone you care for is experiencing symptoms of heat illness, find a cooler space.”

Health authorities recommend a number of tips to stay cool during the sweltering heat, such as:

  • Keeping a thermometer at an easy-to-find spot, so you know when your home is getting too hot.
  • Using awnings, blinds or curtains over your windows to keep the sun out during the day.
  • Not using fans as your main source of cooling, as they do not cool the air or your body.
  • Using a working air conditioner to cool your home.
  • Finding an air-conditioned space or a shaded outdoor location, such as libraries, shopping malls, or recreation spaces, including the ocean, rivers or lakes.

Residents are also advised to check in on at-risk groups during this time, including seniors, kids, pregnant people, the unhoused, and those with preexisting health or mental conditions.

More details on protecting yourself or your loved ones are available online through the Fraser Health website.
