Original story below.

COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY — The northbound lane of Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt remains closed as crews continue urgent work on a sinkhole that appeared Thursday evening, June 5.

“We were hoping to allow traffic through early this afternoon, but due to unforeseen geotechnical circumstances, we are pushing our next update time to 5 p.m. this evening,” wrote DriveBC in a noon update.

In a statement to Victor Kaisar with CFJC Today, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said the sinkhole was an “isolated incident related to Trans Mountain’s pipeline boring work in the area”.

There is still no estimated time for reopening. Drivers are asked to use Highway 1 or Highway 3 as alternate routes.

DriveBC initially reported the sinkhole between Portia and the Zopkios brake check at 8:27 p.m. last night, citing that the incident has deemed the road “unsafe” and must be “temporarily closed”.
