UPDATE, 9:55 A.M. SATURDAY: DriveBC now says the next update on the Coquihalla Highway is 4 p.m. Saturday, as the highway remains closed in both directions between Hope and Merritt due to emergency sinkhole repairs. They’re reminding people that this next update at 4 p.m. is not an estimated time of reopening.

UPDATE 5:11 P.M. FRIDAY: YRB Nicola, the provincial service contractor based in Merritt, has confirmed that the Coquihalla Highway remains closed northbound and a southbound closure will be in place at 9 p.m. tonight due to ongoing sinkhole repairs. YRB Nicola is asking motorists to please defer to Highway 1 and 3. The next update scheduled is 10 a.m. Saturday.

Earlier today, DriveBC reported at 11:56 a.m. Friday morning that it had been hoping to allow traffic through early this afternoon, but due to unforeseen geotechnical circumstances, it was pushing its next-update time to 5 p.m. Friday evening.

However, the next update from provincial contractors is Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Original story:

COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY — DriveBC reported at 8:27 p.m. Thursday night on its X/Twitter account that the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) is closed northbound between Hope and Merritt for immediate maintenance.

In response to a question from a person on X/Twitter, DriveBC followed up at 8:41 p.m. and said, “Crews are working on immediate sink hole repairs on the northbound side. The road has been deemed unsafe and therefore needs to be temporarily closed.”

DriveBC says there’s been a northbound washout between exit 202 (Portia) and exit 217 (Zopkios brake check – 3 km south of the Great Bear Snowshed).

Alternate routes are available on Highway 1 or 3. The next update on DriveBC’s website is 10:30 p.m.

On its website, DriveBC says it reserves the right to restrict travel at any time of the year depending on road conditions.
