ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford Canucks are going on a generational run this season– and they’re not slowing down.

On Thursday (May 29), Canucks took a 1-0 lead in Game 1 of its first-ever AHL Western Conference Finals series against the Texas Stars.

The first period went scoreless for nearly nine minutes until Texas forward Kole Lind broke the ice. Abby’s Guillaume Brisebois eventually responded, tying up the game with only 1:04 left on the clock.

Six minutes into the second period, Ty Mueller snuck up on Texas netminder Remi Poirier thanks to a smooth set-up by Linus Karlsson. Another six minutes later, Stars’ Antonio Stranges evened out the second period 2-2.

By the third period, both goaltenders stood on their posts against a heavy barrage by their respective teams. Artūrs Šilovs stayed a brick wall while the Canucks outshot the Stars 15-9, but the game still went into overtime.

With five minutes into sudden death, Abbotsford blueliner Christian Wolanin called the game, earning the team a 3-2 OT win.

“It’s nice to get the first one, but the job’s not finished,” Wolanin told rinkside reporter Olivia McDonald post-game. “We’ve got plenty of work to do, and we know they’re gonna be hungry.”

Last night marked the first time both teams have met since the franchise moved to Abbotsford. Canucks host again at 7 p.m. tomorrow, May 31, at the Abbotsford Centre.
