Chilliwack to host cultural showcase honouring Indigenous Peoples Day
CHILLIWACK — A celebration of Indigenous culture is set to take centre stage in Chilliwack on June 17 as the Chilliwack Cultural Centre and the Chamber of Commerce present the Rooted Waters Cultural Showcase.
The public event, held in honour of Indigenous Peoples Day, invites the community to experience Indigenous storytelling, art and traditions through a day of performances, demonstrations and connection.
At the heart of the showcase is the premiere community screening of Rooted Waters. It’s described as a video series developed in partnership with Tourism Chilliwack, Chilliwack Economic Partners, Stolo Community Futures, Baker Newby and the City of Chilliwack. The series celebrates the histories and enduring ties to the land held by the nine Indigenous Nations whose traditional territories border Chilliwack.
“Rooted Waters is more than a video series — it’s a tribute to the people, history, and resilience of Indigenous communities in this region,” said Leanna Kemp, CEO of the Chilliwack Chamber in a news release.
