UPDATE 10:35 P.M.: West Vancouver PD has released the following statement confirming the death of a 4-year-old child after being hit by a bus in West Vancouver near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. They released the statement at 8:43 p.m. Wednesday night on their X/Twitter account:
“West Vancouver Police are investigating an incident involving a Translink bus near the Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal that left one dead and two injured. At approximately 3:29 p.m. this afternoon, the West Vancouver Police Department responded to a tragic incident at the intersection of Keith Road and Bay Street in Horseshoe Bay, where pedestrians were reported to be pinned beneath a transit bus.”
“Upon arrival, WVPD officers found West Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services and BC Emergency Health Services on scene and engaged in life-saving efforts for three individuals. Despite these efforts, a four-year-old boy was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. His mother was transported to Lions Gate Hospital in critical condition. A second woman, believed to be a family friend, was taken to the same hospital and is currently in stable condition. Next-of-kin notifications have been completed, and we wish to take this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time.”
West Vancouver Police say the driver of the bus, identified as a TransLink employee, is cooperating fully with investigators and is currently being interviewed by police. The bus involved in the incident has been seized for mechanical inspection. While the investigation remains in its early stages, preliminary findings indicate that speed was not a contributing factor.
