CHILLIWACK — A community-based organization has received some new additions to help feed the grieving souls seeking comfort under its roof.

Through a $1,500 grant from the Chilliwack Foundation, the Chilliwack Hospice Society has installed new fridges at its main office on Vedder Road and its charity thrift store, Thrifty Boutique.

“Grief can feel incredibly isolating, but when people gather to cook or share a meal, it becomes easier to talk, to listen, and to simply be together,” said Sue Knott, executive director of the Society.

The group added that volunteers and grief support groups have been using the fridge to prepare all kinds of meals, from a pot of soup to post-session snacks and refreshments.

“These fridges may seem like a small upgrade, but it has already deepened the sense of community and care we strive to create in every one of our free programs.”

One such program is the Men’s Cooking Group held on the last Saturday of each month, where men can connect with other grieving participants over a casual dinner on their grief journey. At the Thrifty Boutique, volunteers assisting shoppers and sorting merchandise can store their drinks, lunches and treats.

“Chilliwack Hospice Society extends heartfelt thanks to the Distribution Committee of the Chilliwack Foundation for making these purchases possible and for its ongoing support of the Society’s work over the years,” wrote the organization.
