BC Transit approves more FVX service hours, delays route from Mission to Agassiz

CHILLIWACK — Transit riders in the Fraser Valley are winning and losing some this coming year– BC Transit has approved more service hours on the Fraser Valley Express (FVX), but a proposed transit service between Mission and Agassiz has been delayed.

At a Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) meeting on Thursday, May 22, staff reported that the FVX has been confirmed to get three expansion buses and a total of 9,500 more hours worth of service.

“The approved expansion requests are generally those that have a high potential for ridership growth, and/or are addressing acute operational challenges that can only be solved with an investment of service hours/vehicles,” wrote Alison Stewart, FVRD Manager of Strategic Planning. “The FVX clearly meets these standards.”

On the other hand, the North of Fraser initiative along Highway 7 did not meet those standards this year. The proposed route between downtown Agassiz and downtown Mission would have cut ride times down from four hours to 60 minutes.

“While this is disappointing, it does provide additional time for engagement, more detailed costing and allows for further collaborative planning with the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT),” said Stewart.

The plan will be resent for consideration in the 2026-27 BC Transit funding cycle. Public feedback and other planning activities will continue as those details are needed to finalize service design.

FVX service hours are set to expand in January 2026.

Ridership in the region has been steadily rising since the pandemic, with Chilliwack leading that recovery at more than 120 per cent of its previous peak as of 2023.
