CHILLIWACK — It was a full-circle moment for Valley Huskers special teams coordinator and running backs coach Ryk Piché, catching up with a former high school player of his who now leads one of the CFL’s storied franchises.

Piché recently traveled to Saskatoon to attend the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ main training camp and got the chance of a lifetime to work alongside retired CFL All-Star Andrew Harris and reconnect with his former high school player—now Roughriders head coach—Corey Mace.

“Seeing Corey go from a high school athlete to now leading one of the top organizations in the CFL—it was both surreal and inspiring.”

Piché wrapped up the experience by watching the Green and White game on Saturday, an annual Roughriders tradition.

Piché also expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the Roughriders coaching staff and gather valuable knowledge he can bring back to his role with the Valley Huskers:

“I want to sincerely thank Corey Mace and the entire Roughriders staff for their openness and willingness to share their knowledge,” Piché said. “I learned so much from being around that level of coaching and talent. I’m extremely grateful for the experience.”

With the Valley Huskers spring camp kicking off this Friday night, Piché is energized and ready to implement what he’s learned. Approximately 105 players will be hitting the field this weekend with the opportunity to demonstrate their skill set and earn a spot on the roster.

“I’m excited to bring new ideas and techniques to our guys,” said Piché. “This camp marks the beginning of what I believe will be a strong, focused season for the Huskers.”

Head Coach Bob Reist also weighed in on the excitement heading into the weekend. “We are excited to take the field for spring camp. Our guys have put in a lot of work this off-season and this is the first opportunity to see what that looks like at high speed. This will be a very competitive camp. Every position features some significant battles, and we look forward to coaching this group up and seeing who makes the most of the opportunities.”

Reist says that for some guys, it’s about making the final roster—for others, it’s about becoming a starter.

“This is a fun weekend. Look for Rogan to present a strong challenge at the quarterback position. He’s very athletic and has shown throughout the offseason to be a smart football mind,” Coach Reist said. “He’s going to come in and immediately challenge guys like Jacob and Noah. Grady Andrea is a kid who’s really going to be looking to break out at camp and push Jawad. The two should make an exciting duo in the backfield. And David Carter, a defensive lineman out of Atlanta, is going to come in and compete right away—he’ll make our group better.”
