MISSION — BC Hydro is adding a new tool to its power arsenal in two B.C. communities– Mission and Sun Peaks, near Kamloops.

This spring, the provider will be installing 200 residential batteries in Sun Peaks and Harrison Mills. The Peak Saver project combines energy from small-scale sources like home batteries and smart thermostats, as well as managed EV charging, to help balance demands on the electricity grid more efficiently.

“This exciting Power Smart project reaffirms BC Hydro’s dedication to expanding new and dynamic energy solutions and technology to redefine how communities manage and consume energy in the future,” said Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions Adrian Dix.

“Virtual power plants are a groundbreaking approach to test the future of energy management and build a more resilient, efficient and sustainable power grid overall.”

Eligible customers will receive an Eguana Technologies Evolve LFP 14kWh/5kW battery, which BC Hydro will manage to ensure peak performance during high demand. The energy provider adds that home battery storage offers both sustainability and cost benefits.

“This important project will help us better understand how batteries can mitigate outages and help keep costs low for customers by potentially deferring the need for additional, costly capital infrastructure in certain constrained regions and areas,” said Chris O’Riley, president of BC Hydro.

Peak Saver programs have seen a surge of participation since October 2024, doubling to more than 100,000 members to date. Participants have contributed to 40 megawatts in demand savings, or roughly 40,000 EVs.

More information on the project, battery storage rebates or the Peak Saver program is available through the BC Hydro website.
