Residents urged to stay safe after several apartment fires in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Fire Department is urging residents to stay fire-safe after extinguishing a recent trail of apartment blazes.

Throughout the first few months of this year, many residents have been displaced due to a number of fires in apartment buildings, homes and other private properties. The Fire Department asks all building owners and property managers to actively review and practice their Fire Safety Plan.

“These vital documents outline emergency procedures, staff responsibilities, and maintenance schedules for fire protection equipment – all crucial elements for a swift and effective response,” wrote Chilliwack Fire. “It’s not enough for a plan to be well-understood. […] A well-practiced plan is the blueprint for saving lives.”

Residents are also asked to practice the following habits:

  • Practice home-safe habits, e.g., safe smoking and vaping practices, safe charging of electronics, and heating safety.
  • Know your escape routes and identify two ways out.
  • Discuss emergency plans with your household, considering everyone’s specific needs.
  • Practice your escape plan with a fire drill.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly.

“As a community, we must use these experiences as a reminder to collectively recommit to fire safety practices, ensuring the well-being and safety of everyone,” said Fire Chief Andrew Brown.

More information on creating and practicing a home escape plan is available through Chilliwack Fire’s Life Safety Education page.
