Drunk driver rams police car in early morning collision in Chilliwack
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack drivers faced a hectic early commute after a drunk driver rammed several cars, including a police car, at a section of Yale Road this morning (May 16).
At 3:02 a.m., a Chilliwack RCMP officer saw the driver of a blue BMW exhibiting signs of impaired driving near the intersection of Yale Road and Hodgins Road. When they tried to conduct a traffic stop, the car allegedly crashed into the police vehicle and two other parked cars as it tried to flee.
The BMW then crashed into a third civilian car before stopping against a light pole. The driver was safely arrested and taken to hospital for minor injuries. He now remains in custody for a bail hearing, and charges of assault on a Peace Officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police and impaired operation will be recommended.
“This incident demonstrates the hard work of Front-Line officers, their high visibility in the community and their efforts to reduce crime and ensure public safety,” said Constable Bradley Holditch with the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment. “It showcases the dangers of police work, particularly when initiating traffic stops and officers’ ability to work under high stress and harmful situations, bringing incidents to a safe conclusion.”
