Public hearing to be held next week for proposed affordable housing complex in Chilliwack

May 14, 2025 | 10:21 AM

CHILLIWACK — A public hearing will be held next week that could pave the way for a 75-unit apartment complex offering affordable housing for seniors, single-parent families and individuals with low to moderate incomes, next to Ruth and Naomi’s.

According to the text of an ad from the City of Chilliwack that was published in a Chilliwack newspaper last Friday, Chilliwack City Council will review an application from Jordan Kutev Architect Inc. to amend the text of the R9 (Affordable Rental Housing) zone in order to increase density and reduce parking to help facilitate the construction of an affordable rental apartment at 46105 Princess Avenue.

The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, May 20 at 2 p.m. in council chambers, 8550 Young Road.

As stated in the text of an engagement letter obtained by Fraser Valley Today, Lookout Housing and Health Society has advised residents in the immediate vicinity that the property at 46105 Princess Avenue is being considered for a proposed development. The letter was signed by Megan Kriger, director of development for the society.

The property itself has a rezoning application sign from the City of Chilliwack.

Lookout, which has provided safe, supportive and affordable housing for individuals and families in need across British Columbia for 50 years, says initial engagement for the project was completed in 2020. Since then, the society has collected community input and feedback to better inform plans.

“Together, we’ve carefully designed project to be a positive addition to the neighbourhood, with thoughtful architecture and on-site support to help tenants thrive,” the letter stated.

Lookout says the project aligns with Chilliwack’s goals for “inclusive, sustainable growth” and will contribute to local businesses and community life while enabling tenants to gain the stability they need to carve out better futures.

“With BC Housing’s income requirements ensuring tenants are carefully screened, and Lookout’s proven track record of successful housing management, we’re confident this will be a positive addition to Princess Avenue,” the letter stated.

Lookout says there is still an opportunity to share feedback by emailing Kriger directly at her email (megan.kriger@lookoutsociety.ca).

“All perspectives will help shape a development that serves both future residents and the broader community,” Kriger stated. “We at Lookout Housing and Health Society appreciate your time and consideration.”
