Chilliwack Fire Dept. confirms ‘multiple’ explosions heard around time of car fire in Promontory

UPDATE 9:30 P.M., WEDNESDAY: Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar has confirmed that “multiple” explosions were reported around the time of a car fire on MacSwan Drive in Promontory.

“Just after 11:45 p.m. on (Tuesday) May 13, 2025, firefighters from Hall 4 responded to a vehicle fire in the 47000 block of MacSwan Drive. Bystanders reported multiple explosions,” Minar said in a statement emailed to Fraser Valley Today. “The fire damaged a second vehicle and caused exposure damage that required BC Hydro and Telus to attend. Firefighters acted quickly to extinguish the fire, preventing further damage.”

Assistant Fire Chief Minar says there were no reported injuries. The Chilliwack Fire Department conducted an initial investigation; however, the cause was undetermined due to the extent of damage to the originating vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation by the RCMP. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP has confirmed police are investigating an overnight fire in Promontory that destroyed one vehicle and significantly amaged a second.

According to information posted in a Chilliwack-area Facebook group, the fire broke out sometime around midnight on McSwan Drive near Phillip Street, in front of a city park, early Wednesday (May 14).

One person on Facebook said the fire was so intense it shook her home, while another Facebook user said part of the car axle exploded and flew across the street and onto Brewster Place.

“Hit my house and landed on my neighbour’s roof; thank God myself and another neighbour was able to put out that fire,” the Facebook user said. “So thankful nobody is hurt and none of the houses caught fire. Very scary.”

According to a brief statement from police, police have an open file on the incident.

“This incident remains under investigation. No injuries have been reported at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP,” an RCMP spokesperson told Fraser Valley Today.

An email has been sent to the three assistant fire chiefs from the Chilliwack Fire Department seeking information on the incident and whether arson was involved.

A picture of the aftermath of the fire not only depicts a completely destroyed vehicle, but also significant fire or smoke damage to a vehicle parked behind it.
