SURREY — Charges have been laid in a stabbing incident that left one person dead and another critically injured in the Guildford neighbourhood of Surrey.

RCMP responded to reports of a stabbing at a home in the 14700 block of 108a Avenue on December 14 at around 3 a.m. Surrey Police Service (SPS) and RCMP found two people suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Despite life-saving measures, one woman died on scene, while the second victim was taken to hospital and treated for serious injuries. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) then took over and worked with several agencies, including the BC Coroners Service, to continue investigating.

On April 15, 21-year-old Gurtaj Singh was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He’s to remain in custody until his next court appearance.

“While charges have been laid against Mr. Singh, this investigation is not over,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We believe there are additional parties who were involved in this act of violence and we will continue in our pursuit to bring all those responsible to justice for the victims and their families.”

Investigators say this was a one-time incident over a personal dispute with no ongoing risk to the public.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the IHIT Info Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
