MISSION — A package containing several unauthorized items has been seized at a medium-security unit in Mission last week.

On April 24, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said vigilant staff at the Mission Institution found the contraband package carrying items like methamphetamine, THC shatter, tobacco, and one charging cable. The estimated institutional value of these seizures is $170,125.

Police have been notified, and the institution is investigating.

CSC works with police and uses a number of tools, such as ion scanners and drug-detector dogs, to search its buildings and the people in them, but that activity might ramp up soon.

“CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” wrote Mission Institution in a news release.

One of those measures is a new tip line for all federal institutions so the CSC can receive additional information about activities related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions.

The toll-free number is 1‑866‑780‑3784, ensuring that any information is protected and that callers remain anonymous.

Contraband has been found in at least three other Fraser Valley-area prisons during April alone. The latest incident occurred during a 10-day lockdown of another medium-security facility in Abbotsford.
