Chilliwack School District expands dual credit program, accepting new applications

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack School District (SD33) and the University of the Fraser Valley’s dual credit program are looking to make it easier for students to stay in the classroom post-grad– as education assistants.

Grade 12 students can now choose to sign up for the third cohort of the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, or the first cohort for Inclusive Education Assistants.

“The ECEA dual credit program is the foundation of knowledge that you build on throughout your ECEA career,” said GW Graham graduate Izzy Betts, one of 15 students from the first cohort in 2023. She now works for SD33’s Just B4 Preschool Program.

“The tools and knowledge I gained from the program have enabled me to support and work as a team with my students on their learning journey.”

The program allows students to earn high school and post-secondary credits at the same time, making them immediately eligible to work in their chosen field upon completion.

“Dual credit […] provides our students with a credential they can add to their resume that gives them a leg up once they graduate,” said Heather Elliott, acting vice principal of career education. “We’re able to support students with meaningful transitions beyond our hallways and classrooms.”

Registration is online through the ECE or Inclusive EA portals. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 5.
