CHILLIWACK — The Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment is launching its Enhanced Policing Program as the region prepares for the arrival of summer and seasonal recreational opportunities.

With lakes, forests and recreation areas drawing crowds, RCMP officers are working alongside community partners to increase patrols and promote safety across popular outdoor destinations.

The program will target forestry service roads, lakes and campgrounds, with a focus on preventing impaired driving and curbing disturbances linked to excessive celebrations. Police are also reminding visitors to follow local parking regulations or risk fines and towing.

The Victoria Day long weekend (May 17 – 19) traditionally marks the start of the region’s summer season. By the time the busy weekend arrives, RCMP will be ready to support the public to explore the outdoors safely.

Off-road vehicle users are reminded to wear helmets and ride in groups, while hikers should plan ahead, dress appropriately and avoid venturing alone into remote areas.

Once lakes warm up, officials are urging swimmers to stay close to shore, avoid diving into unknown waters, and supervise children at all times. Boaters must carry their boating licence and ensure life jackets are available for all passengers.

Impaired driving remains a top concern, with increased patrols and checkstops planned on roads, trails and waterways. Police are urging residents and visitors to make responsible transportation plans.

The RCMP says by working together, the public can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for everyone in the Upper Fraser Valley.
