CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP says there isn’t any immediate evidence from a law enforcement perspective that recent acts of animal torture are occurring or have been reported to police.

A social media post earlier this week in a Chilliwack-area Facebook group with over 43,000 followers urged cat owners to keep their felines safe due to an alleged threat of harm.

“Keep your cats inside – there have been multiple instances recently of cats being tortured and beheaded in/around the Garrison area,” the ominous post stated on Tuesday, April 29 at 12:35 p.m. “This sicko needs to get caught asap.”

Fraser Valley Today contacted the Chilliwack RCMP detachment for comment and learned police have not located any files suggesting recent acts of animal abuse in the Garrison area.

“There is no information to suggest there is a trend of animals being abused or tortured in Chilliwack. We encourage the public to report these incidents,” a Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson said.

That’s not to say the alleged animal torture acts haven’t occurred, rather police have not been able to locate any files substantiating the claims.

When asked if there were have been previous incidents of animal abuse or torture that police might be aware of, an RCMP spokesperson said the question was “much too broad for us to answer at this time.”

The spokesperson says the BC SPCA has authority to investigate complaints of animal abuse or neglect.

Fraser Valley Today has reached out to the Chilliwack SPCA chapter and is awaiting comment.

FVT also contacted the person who made the Facebook post to inquire whether it had been reported to the Chilliwack RCMP and Chilliwack SPCA.
