MERRITT — Merritt RCMP are asking for help in identifying any suspects after a pair of houses on the 1300 block of Pine Street were intentionally set on fire Saturday (April 26) night.

Police say there were called just before 9:00 p.m. to assist Merritt Fire Rescue crews, who were battling the blazes at a pair of flood-damaged houses on separate properties.

“Due to the circumstances of the structure fires, and after some discussion with personnel of the Merritt Fire Rescue Department it is believed these buildings were intentionally set on fire,” Merritt RCMP Const. Blake Chursinoff said, noting police have begun an arson investigation.

Chursinoff says property owners in the area who may have video surveillance footage of the incident should reach out to police so they can further their investigation.

“The Merritt RCMP also wish to thank the MRFD for their swift and strong response to these fires, ensuring that neighbouring properties were unharmed and Merritt citizens kept safe,” Chursinoff said.

The area around the fire was slated for a restoration project in partnership with the local Nicola Valley First Nations.

People with information or video of this incident are being asked to call the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262 and reference file 2025-1867.
