UPDATE: 1 in custody after lockdown on Seabird Island

UPDATE 3:30 p.m., Saturday: Seabird Island band has lifted the shelter-in-place and thanked the public for their cooperation.

UPDATE 8:04 a.m. Sunday: A 46-year-old Agassiz man has been safely apprehended following a high-risk situation.

At roughly 12:33 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, RCMP responded to a report of a man who claimed to have a firearm and threatened to hurt himself. Police came to his home on Seabird Island, but he was not there. A Shelter-In-Place advisory was issued to residents shortly after.

At about 3:15 p.m., the man was found, safely taken into custody under the Mental Health Act, and taken to a local hospital.

“The Shelter-in-Place Advisory has been lifted,” said RCMP in a release. “Agassiz RCMP would like to thank the residents of Seabird Island for their cooperation and patience during this very dynamic and stressful situation.”

SEABIRD ISLAND (AGASSIZ) —Seabird Island First Nation has issued an urgent shelter-in-place advisory on Saturday, April 26, as the RCMP looks for an individual who is potentially armed and walking around.

Shelter procedures were issued at around 2:30 p.m., asking residents to stay indoors, lock all doors and windows, and not go outside until further notice.

“If you are in immediate danger or observe anything suspicious, call 911 immediately,” stated the Seabird Island band. “Police are working closely with us to protect our community, and we are communicating as actively as we can in the interest of everyone’s safety.”
