YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Supporting Local

Apr 25, 2025 | 12:54 PM

I know that given recent events, I’m not the only one who is focusing more on buying Canadian.

After months of economic uncertainty and the threat of Trump’s tariffs, I have heard from people throughout my constituency on how they are paying more attention to where their money goes and how they can be more mindful in choosing Canadian and British Columbian products. This trend is clear across our country: we will stand together, we will not be bullied, and this challenge will only strengthen our pride in being Canadian.

It’s been heartwarming to see how people have been choosing to look for the maple leaf labels at our grocery stores, to plan their vacations within our beautiful provinces and territories, to eat at local restaurants, and to shop at local businesses. These are challenging times, but it has been inspiring to see that British Columbians have been leading the way with their everyday choices. Our government has been working with residents and businesses to make sure that the significant impacts of trade uncertainties are less devastating on our local communities.

That’s why we’ve been encouraging people to support Canadian companies and to travel within in our borders, supporting our local economy. Most importantly, we’ve been working hard to protect core services, invest in provincially focused supports, expand trade with diverse partners, and stand up for workers and businesses who are impacted by the unjustified tariffs.

There are such great ways that we can all support local, including through our government’s Buy BC program. This program helps food and beverage businesses in the province to access new markets through retail partnerships, networking, and the iconic BuyBC logo. Since relaunching in 2017, the Buy BC Partnership Program has supported more than 600 B.C. producers and processors. Right now, more than $2 million is available to support eligible businesses to participate in marketing projects to help boost awareness, demand, and sales of their products. Applications for Buy BC’s licensing program are always open, and our Partnership Program will open again in early summer 2025 for local businesses looking to expand and thrive. These programs help create a stronger and more secure food supply chain and help British Columbians select fresh-tasting, high-quality products that are grown, raised, or made in B.C.

In my own constituency, nothing beats satisfying my sweet tooth with a waffle topped with locally grown berries at the Waffle Co., or grabbing a midday pick me up from the local coffee shop, Espresso Café.

With the weather getting nicer, it’s the perfect time to connect with family and friends and support local, checking out your local farmer’s market or sitting on the patio of a local restaurant. Our government will continue to support people and businesses in British Columbia, no matter what these unjustified tariffs bring.
