Chilliwack councillors OK demolition of Young Road home that city bought for nearly $1 million in 2024
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack councillors have accepted a submitted bid of just over $120,000 for the demolition of a Young Road home and garage that the City of Chilliwack purchased for a little less than a million dollars last year.
According to a staff report prepared by Eric Schulz, the City of Chilliwack issued a request for quotations to pre-qualified contractors for the demolition of a house and garage at 9392 Young Road. Proposals were received by three companies by the mandated closing date of April 7, 2025: T&T Demolition Ltd., Clearview Demolition Ltd. and Matcon Demolition Inc.
In late 2024, the city purchased the property in conjunction with an ongoing downtown redevelopment, since it was contiguous with three other city-owned properties that had been previously acquired to increase available parking in the downtown core, according to Schulz’s staff report. While the house was not listed on the Chilliwack heritage interest inventory, staff conducted a review of the potential to relocate the home but concluded the estimated cost to perform abatement works, upgrade and relocate the home was cost prohibitive.
A request for quotations was released for the complete abatement of hazardous materials and demolition of the house and garage. The RFQ contained a pre-project hazardous building materials survey, which found that the house contained a large variety of hazardous materials, such as asbestos and leachable lead paint, that would need to removed prior to demolition. The RFQ was open for three and a half weeks and included a site meeting that addressed any project concerns.
