Motor vehicle crash near Coliseum leads to massive power outage in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — A motor vehicle crashed and struck a power pole on Ashwell Drive close to the Chilliwack Coliseum late Monday night, leaving thousands of people without electricity in Chilliwack overnight.

According to BC Hydro’s dashboard, a motor vehicle accident at about 11:54 p.m. Monday night led to a power outage in which 3,357 customers lost power.

Multiple witnesses on Facebook described a motor vehicle accident involving a utility pole. Witnesses also took a picture of the vehicle involved and RCMP members attending.

The vehicle involved appeared to resemble a Honda Civic two-door coupe.

Witnesses suggest the driver of the vehicle may have tried fleeing from the vehicle, but this has not been confirmed by Chilliwack RCMP.

Residents near Chilliwack General Hospital said they heard the hospital’s loud generator operating during the power outage.

As of 6:45 a.m. Monday morning, 849 customers are still without power. Crews are on site. The estimated time that power will return for them is 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Apr. 22.
