Victim identified in Langley homicide investigation

LANGLEY — Police have identified the victim in a Langley homicide that began as a suspicious fire late last week.

Langley RCMP were called to a structure fire in the 20500 block of 56 Avenue around 7:24 a.m. on April 18, where a body was discovered inside. The death was deemed suspicious and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in.

IHIT has now confirmed the case is a homicide and identified the victim as 47-year-old Tyler Smith of Langley, who had recently moved to the area.

“We are hoping that anyone with information about Mr. Smith will come forward to speak to IHIT,” Sgt. Freda Fong said in a statement. “We are particularly interested in anyone who may have been in contact with Mr. Smith in the recent days leading up to his death.”

Investigators are asking anyone with information or dash-camera footage from the area between 10 p.m. on April 17 and 8 a.m. on April 18 to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
