CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Fire Department has been on scene of an apartment building as flames raged from its roof Saturday afternoon (Apr. 19)

At around 3:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 9300 block of Corbould Street, near Kipp Street. Firefighters from all halls responded to the scene, quickly established a water supply, and two aerial apparatuses were used to cool the upper sections. Despite all this, the unprotected attic space had enough fuel and oxygen to make the fire harder to control.

Videos shared by Chilliwack resident William Snow show smoke blowing around the building perimeter as firefighters hose down the four-storey building’s top floor from the outside.

Other witnesses say people were still in the building when the fire department showed up, though no injuries to the public or firefighters were reported.

The building did experience significant fire and water damage, and no residents will be able to return home at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department.

Support agencies including RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services (BCAS), FortisBC, BC Hydro, and BC Transit were on scene to assist. Emergency Support Services (ESS) was also activated to provide support to displaced residents.

“This incident serves as a strong reminder that fire safety planning and regular drills are critical in apartment buildings,” said Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar. “It’s essential that building owners/managers take an active role in educating residents on fire safety and ensuring that life-safety systems are properly maintained. These proactive measures make a vital difference in protecting lives.”
