CHILLIWACK — The Chiefs are getting some recognition for their hard work this season.

20-year-old forward Mateo Mrsic has been named to the Second Team of BCHL’s year-end All-Stars. The six-man team includes Penticton Vees goaltender Will Ingemann, Lucas Lemieux of the Trail Smoke Eaters, Langley Rivermen forward Ryan Schelling, and Brooks Bandits players Nathan Free and Ethan Beyer.

Mrsic is also in the running for the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy — Most Valuable Player. He joins Sherwood Park Crusaders’ Jeremy Loranger and Cranbrook Bucks player Rasmus Svartström in the nominee list.

The Surrey-raised player immediately showed off his skills during his first season with the Chiefs in 2021-22, posting 14 goals and 36 points in 51 games. During the regular season, Mrsic sat fourth in league scoring with 70 points.

Chiefs coach Brian Maloney has also been nominated for a trophy: the Joe Tennant Memorial Trophy for Coach of the Year. Joining him in that list are Trail coach Tim Fragle and the Vees’ Fred Harbinson.

Award winners will be announced after round 2 of the BCHL Playoffs.

The Chilliwack Chiefs face off against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on home ice tonight and Saturday, April 19. Due to ice issues at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, the Bulldogs’ home games are set to be played out of the Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo.

Puck drops at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online.
