CHILLIWACK — Mounties in Mission were called to Mission Memorial Hospital late last month after a man went recreational shooting in the Chilliwack backcountry and wound up with fragments of shotgun rounds in his legs.

Mission RCMP say they were asked to attend Mission Memorial Hospital on Monday evening, March 31 for the report of a male who had gunshot round fragments in his leg. The man said he had been out doing recreational shooting with friends on a Chilliwack-area forest service road earlier that day, but didn’t notice the fragments in his legs until after he left.

Fortunately, police say the fragments were minimal and no medical intervention was needed. Mounties advised the group that the area they had been shooting in was an area closed to shooting.

Mounties are reminding anyone in the Fraser Valley who might be looking to do recreational shooting in the backcountry to first confirm whether they are permitted to do so in the area they are considering, and to also use proper gun-safety practices at all times, so as to avoid incidents like this one.
