ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford PD dealt with its normal share of 300-plus police files over the weekend, one of which involved a motorist who crossed the U.S.-Canada border illegally.

According to a social media post from the department, AbbyPD’s frontline personnel handled 345 police files between Friday afternoon and Monday morning. The primary focus revolved around road safety, removing 30 impaired drivers and 11 excessive speeders from the road.

“For some additional context, we have removed 403 impaired drivers from Abbotsford roads since January,” Sgt. Paul Walker told Fraser Valley Today Monday morning. “Considering that we had only removed just over 800 in 2024, we’re on a huge up tick. I believe that this rise has many factors however we have provided additional training to our frontline officers over the past year resulting in an increased enforcement approach to impaired driving.”

Officers also arrested a prohibited driver, issued three driving suspension notices and distributed 81 violation tickets.

Officers also dealt with various incidents, including thefts, frauds, suspicious vehicles and persons, assaults, calls involving individuals in crisis, assisting other agencies, missing persons, border runner calls, break-ins, and traffic-related issues. Its Gang Crime Unit located a vehicle that had run the border, boxed it in along Highway 1, and arrested the driver, who was then turned over to Canada Border Services Agency.

“The vehicle ran the Huntingdon border crossing and did not stop at the booth to check-in and declare,” Sgt. Walker said. “Officers located the vehicle merging onto Highway 1 at the Sumas on ramp.  The vehicle was followed, until officers were in position for a rolling vehicle block which allowed officers to stop the vehicle and arrest the driver. He was handed over to CBSA for processing back at the border crossing.  He was an American citizen.”

“Our teams continued to perform checks on liquor establishments to ensure regulatory compliance and conducted numerous curfew checks on offenders out on bail to maintain public safety. It was a busy weekend,” AbbyPD said.
