FRASER VALLEY — More than 400 Fraser Valley residents attended the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre’s first Community Days over spring break. Thanks to that positive response, the event is now getting a relaunch this fall.

On Saturday, March 22 and Saturday, March 29, visitors from Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Abbotsford were invited to explore the site for free. Kids and adults were greeted with interactive booths such as a spinning prize wheel, 3D printer design creation and the Planetarium Star Theatre, where patrons enjoyed various space-themed shows.

“The Space Centre is the perfect place to spark curiosity about space,” said Michael Unger, director of programming at the Space Centre. “All it took was one visit here as a child to inspire my lifelong fascination with space science.”

Complimentary admission will return for the next Community Days event to reach more families in the Fraser Valley.

“That’s what we hope to offer kids and families, especially those who might not normally have access to our facilities.”

Community Days was funded by a $50,000 sponsorship from Enbridge. The energy delivery company has partnered with the Space Centre to extend access to the Fraser Valley along its pipeline right-of-way.

Enbridge has also sponsored plans to bring a portable planetarium directly to communities outside Greater Vancouver, providing an immersive mini-space experience in the form of a giant inflatable dome.

Exact dates and times for the next Community Days can be found on the Space Centre’s website when available.

Located in Vancouver’s Vanier Park, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre has been a leader in space science education for over 50 years.
