CHILLIWACK — As the Soowahlie First Nation prepares to clean up one end of the Chilliwack River and its surrounding area this weekend, a local group is hosting a biannual Adopt-A-River campaign tomorrow (Apr. 5).

The Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Society (CVRCS) has teamed up with the City of Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley Regional District for this spring’s cleanup event at Thompson Regional Park.

“Under the City’s Adopt a River program, community groups adopt sections of the Vedder River or Canal and are responsible for providing litter/garbage collection services twice per year,” wrote the City on its website.

Garbage, recycling bags and gloves will all be provided.

Participants can register at the park on 48600 Chilliwack Lake Road from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on cleanup day. All garbage must be dropped off no later than 2:00 p.m.

The CVRCS is also looking for people who can tackle challenging terrain and have 4×4 vehicles. Anyone looking to provide their services can email the group at info@cleanrivers.ca.

The next river clean-up event will likely take place in September.
