FRASER VALLEY — Former Abbotsford newspaper reporter Kevin Gillies has been selected as the Liberal Party’s candidate for Abbotsford-South Langley in the upcoming federal election.

According to a statement from the party, Gillies is a longtime resident of the Fraser Valley, having lived in Mission and Abbotsford since 1995; the latter since 2003.

LPC says Gillies has worked in a variety of fields, including as a real estate agent, supporting homeless individuals in shelters and supported housing, supporting people with a variety of special needs, and as a journalist for different newspapers — in North Vancouver, White Rock, but mostly Abbotsford-Mission — including as the Fraser Valley stringer for the daily Vancouver Sun.

“Abbotsford-South Langley will be on the front lines of U.S. tariffs and Donald Trump’s trade war,” Gillies said. “Mark Carney is the best leader for Canada going forward, and I look forward to bringing this region’s concerns to him and Ottawa.”

Carney is educated, experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to managing national economic crises, Gillies said, adding, it’s something his opponents in this election lack.

“Mark Carney is the strongest leader for Canada and Abbotsford-South Langley at this time,” Gillies said.

Gillies said he’s knocking on a lot of doors this campaign. “I am thrilled for this opportunity to talk to residents of Abbotsford and South Langley about this region’s concerns,” he said.

Gillies added, “Anyone interested in lending a helping hand is welcome to reach out. We’d love to have you onboard.”

338 Canada projects the Conservative Party with only a six-point lead in this riding (48-42) as of Monday, March 31.
