New Abbotsford long-term care facility set to go to public hearing Monday

ABBOTSFORD — After some consultation with the public, a 200-bed long-term care facility could soon be built near the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

At the March 11 Council meeting, City of Abbotsford staff explained Fraser Health’s plans to build two buildings just south of the Maplewood House long-term care facility: one for childcare and one six-story long-term care facility.

That parcel of land is currently zoned for mid-rise residential units, so the City would need to rezone it into a “Health Campus” on the Official Community Plan (OCP), allowing for medical, health and residential care.

Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens said he was happy to see the motion come forward.

“I know it has to go to a public hearing, but this is those extended care beds that can’t be built soon enough,” he said at the meeting.

“I think it is an answer to some of the challenges that we’re facing because a lot of the beds in the hospital right now are plugged with people that need to be moved on to longer term care.”

The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, at 6 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.
