CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack and the rest of the Fraser Valley could get hammered by heavy downpours and thunderstorms later today.

According to a special weather statement issued at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday morning (Mar. 26) by the national weather forecaster, Environment Canada says the threat of thunderstorms will increase this afternoon as a warm front lifts across the area.

The weather statement covers the Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver, greater Victoria, the Malahat Highway and Southern Gulf Islands.

Hazards include water pooling on roads and a sudden reduction in visibility due to heavy rains.

Environment Canada says after a brief break this evening, a cold front will bring what it calls a “widespread risk” of heavy rain and heavy thunderstorms to the south coast tonight and carrying over into the overnight period.

Forecasters say the greatest threat from this weather pattern is strong wind gusts of up to 70 km/hour, along with heavy rainfall rates. There’s a minimal chance of large hail between 2 centimeters or greater for areas near the U.S. border, likke Langley Township, Aldergrove and Abbotsford.
